Markets Mixed Following FOMC Announcement
Fed is likely holding interest rates near zero through 2023
The new top for the SPY is set at $360 and we believe it will be retested by the end of September or early October. U.S. Benchmarks slumped today, giving up most of their gains following the latest from the Federal Open Market Committee. Fed Chair Powell met with the press following the latest FOMC meeting and announced the Fed is likely holding interest rates near zero through 2023 while also outlining the latest risks to the economy. Inflation and employment were also discussed as key factors for the move. August Retail Sales, released today, showed a 0.6% rise while tomorrow we will see monthly housing data and weekly employment reports. Gold Futures, the Dollar, and Treasuries saw moved slightly higher while Oil saw a sizable boost.
Both Asian and Europen markets closed to mixed results. With the SPY breaking through its overhead resistance at $340, short-term traders could consider adding to positions when SPY is near $332. Our models are still projecting the SPY to trade in the range of $330-$360 and we will look to be buyers into any short-term corrections. We will continue monitoring the VIX as the market can overshoot support and resistance levels when VIX is trading near $20 level, and we encourage all market commentary readers to maintain clearly defined stop-levels for all positions.
